Canadian Overview

Funding

How is Canada\'s education system funded?

Public schools get more than 90% of their funding from the government through local and provincial/territorial taxation. The provincial/territorial government provides funding directly to the schools.

The amount of funding a school district receives is recalculated each year based on the number of regular students, special needs students and location. (See Source 1)

Education in Indigenous communities may be delivered by the communities themselves, with funding assistance directly from the federal government. In some indigenous communities, children and youth attend public schools and the band pays the school system (see section 2 for more information).

In Canada, governments spent $62,562,000,000 on public education in 2013-2014. (See Source 2)
